May Makeup Finds

Finally, finally I’ve got some time to sit down and blog. I apologise for the spotty posting schedule lately, but I’ve been busy, which is nice, but it’s made it more difficult to keep on top of this.

Excuses, I know.

Anyway, it’s a new month, so I’m testing out some new makeup and skincare products. This month is a bit different in that the products I’m using aren’t ones I’ve gone out and bought, they’re ones that I’ve had sitting for a while and not used properly, or at all.

So what am I trying out this month?

We have:

  • Skin Chemists 24 Hour Aqua Repair Facial Serum
  • e.l.f Illuminating Face Primer
  • Model Co 3D Lash Primer

The only one of these I’ve used once is the Model Co lash primer, and that was in a blind panic when I was already late for something, so I thought I’d dig it out of the depths of the makeup tray and give it a proper try when I’m not rushing around.

The Skin Chemists serum and the lash primer both came out of Glossyboxes, whereas the e.l.f primer was something I bought and was intending to use, but didn’t get around to because I was finishing off a tube of something else. That tube is now finished, so the e.l.f primer can take centre stage.

Let’s take a closer look at the products.

Skin Chemists 24 Hour Aqua Repair Facial Serum

This serum claims to give 24 hour hydration, and if any of you have been reading this blog for any length of time, you know I’ve got dry skin. Hopefully, then, this serum will do some hydrating! I’m skeptical of its promise of 24 hours, because knowing my skin it will suck up the hydration like crazy and I’ll be dry as a bone the next morning. We will see, but this has some serious competition – I’ve been using the Elemis Hydraboost serum for a long time, and it’s magnificent. I thought I’d try this out rather than just going out and buying a new bottle of Hydraboost, just in case it’s better. Elemis products and my skin seem to be bff’s forever though, but we’ll see how this goes.

e.l.f Illuminating Face Primer

As well as having dry skin, I’m on the more mature side of skin types and my skin has been wrecked by my medication, so it’s quite dull as well as being dry. Anything that says ‘illuminating’ is okay by me so I want to give this a good try. I have seen some reviews that are like ‘OMG IT HAS GLITTER IN IT’ but I don’t think it looks that obvious in the bottle. It could look totally different on the skin. I’m hoping it’s not too sparkly! I have pumped a little out and I can’t really see the glitter to the extent that some people have had meltdowns over it, but that might change when I actually put it on my face.

Model Co 3D Lash Primer

I have used this once before, but only in a panic before a night out when I couldn’t find my false lashes for love nor money, so I slapped on a (few) coat(s) of this under a really extreme mascara and the combination of the two did the trick. I’d like to try it again daily, rather than just for a special occasion, to see if it makes some of my thinner and more… pathetic… mascaras that little bit more ‘wow’. I like a nice thick lash – I don’t wear false lashes daily because they’re a massive pain in the backside to wear every day, and I find my lid gets really dry from repeated use of lash glue as well. But if I can get a decent false lash look by using this primer every day, then why not?

All three of these products are going to have their first big test this weekend – I’m off motor racing with my ‘brother from another mother’ and let me tell you, makeup suffers at race circuits. They’re inevitably windy (which dries out your skin), it’s either pouring with rain or really hot (can we say melty makeup?) and it’s not the kind of place where you see that many people wearing makeup, actually. But me being me, I won’t leave the house without at least some makeup on! So it will be interesting to see if my skin can stay hydrated, my foundation stays put and if my lashes stop traffic (metaphorically speaking).

Let me know in the comments if any of you guys have tried these products and what you think of them!

  1. I haven’t tried any of those products – I wanted the serum in Glossybox, but didn’t get it! If you don’t like the glitter in the primer, I use another one from the e.l.f. primar range and really like it – it’s the hydrating one as I also have dry skin. I’d be interested to hear what you think of it!

    1. The sparkle issue isn’t really as bad as some people are making out, it’s more subtle than I thought but that’s under a full coverage foundation so we’re going to have to see how it goes under something a bit less full on! I intend to try the hydrating primer when winter comes back around so yeah, sparkly face till then.
