Today’s post is: my favourite quote:
“I have no idols. I admire work, dedication and competence.”
~ Ayrton Senna ~
In a way, this quote is a bit ironic for me, because he was one of my idols when I was growing up. I really admired his skill behind the wheel of a Formula One car – there was just something about the way he drove, his precision and focus, that really set him apart from every other driver.
This quote does ring true for me now, though. I don’t really have idols – there are people I admire, people who have shown real dedication and, yes, competence, but I don’t consider them idols or ‘inspiration’. They are people who I think deserve recognition for what they have achieved.
And it’s a diverse range of people, from the feared Night Witches squadron to racing driver Flick Haigh, from beauty YouTubers to a friend of mine who has learned to make shoes… it’s anyone who I consider to have got where they need to be through graft and persistence.
I think it’s because sometimes I lack persistence myself that I look to these people for… not inspiration, but as reminders that if I don’t quit, I can do it. ‘It’ being anything I choose.
So yes, there we go. My favourite quote is from a great man who was taken far too early from this world.
