Today’s post is: My Dream Job
The image should give you a bit of a clue. My dream job would be as a writer, either of articles or books. I am working on my first novel, and I’m hoping to send it to a publisher either later this year or next year.
I’ve always wanted to write for a living. At school I had a flair for creative writing, and my creative writing pieces would often get A-grades. After school, I got into writing fanfics just to keep my eye in, and my writing evolved. Reading some of my fics from my early days makes me cringe. My style was very much teenage angst novel, but as I got older I started writing more serious fics (Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors can get hella political if you let them) and dipping my toes into fics for The West Wing showed I can write some heavy stuff if I need to.
I dropped off fanfic writing a good few years ago to work on original projects, but none of them really took off until I did last year’s NaNoWriMo and built my own world. World-building is great, and every day I think of something new. Last week during my lunch hour I was trying to work out how the bigger towns in my world got their food. I’ve worked out the shape of the continent, shipping routes and the like… it’s something I never thought I’d do, but I have, which is why I want to send it for publishing.
Writing for magazines is a Thing I’d love to do as well. I’ve had one article published already for Woolacombe & Mortehoe Voice, but I’d like to get something published in a magazine with a larger readership. I’m not sure where to start with that one! I can get terribly shy when it comes to self-promotion, especially where my writing is concerned. It’s like promoting this blog – I don’t do it enough, and I know I’ll never make money off this thing if I don’t put myself out there.
So yes, my dream job is as a writer. I will continue to practice my writing, and if I do get my book published, I… I don’t know what I’d do! It would be a dream come true.
