Autumn fashion staples

Tis Autumn, the season of golden leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and all the things I love about the world. Autumn is my favourite season. I can legitimately leave behind all the worries about heat exhaustion and not owning enough pairs of shorts and dive into my tried and true autumn staples.

Fashion changes seasonally, but there are some items that are perennial favourites. They get updated, and yet somehow, they never change and almost everyone has some version of these in their wardrobe.

Jeans

Almost everyone owns jeans in some form or another, be it jeans for work or the more fashionable types. There’s a reason for this. They work well in any season, but it’s in the colder months that they really come into their own. Denim is a warm fabric. You can layer it – if it’s a freezing cold day, stick some tights or leggings underneath your jeans. A decent pair of jeans or two (or three, or four) that suit you well and fit you like a dream will carry you through autumn, winter and well into spring. Spend money on your jeans. Find a cut and brand that makes you look and feel amazing. This advice goes for everyone, regardless of size, shape or gender – a decent set of jeans will see you right for years.

Ankle boots

Another staple for everyone. Ankle boots work well with jeans, or with dresses or skirts. If you’re wearing them with a shorter skirt or short shorts, try tights or stockings that are the same colour as your boots – this will create an illusion that your legs are super long. Black boots and black tights/stockings are the most effective. This is useful for those of us on the shorter side of the height spectrum, trust me. Flats, heels, Chelsea boots, shoe boots, whatever takes your fancy, ankle boots are your friends this and every autumn. Just update them to the latest fashions if you wish, or keep it classic with pairs that you’ve owned for years.

Striped Top

The striped or Breton top is a classic in any season. It can run long or short sleeve, and the stripes can be any colour you like! I favour a white background with blue stripes and long sleeves for autumn, usually worn with dark denim jeans, a leather jacket and my brown Chelsea boots. This style of top is great because it’s another fashion item that suits anyone, regardless of who they are or what size they wear, and there are so many different options out there. If you’re in the UK, the best ones to be found for ladies cuts are the Sailor Tops from Seasalt (here) of which I own many. I don’t know of a reliable source for more masculine cuts, so if anyone can help me out, let me know in the comments!

oOo

I’m so very glad it’s autumn now. As I type this I am pretty much wearing what I’ve just been describing – dark denim, a breton top from a few years ago (black with gold striping) and admittedly slipper boots rather than proper boots, but still boots!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go and crunch through some leaves.
